Offering picturesque views and interesting geological formations, Albuquerque is home to the Sandia Mountains. The site has more than 60 easy to difficult hiking trails, spanning in excess of 150 miles. Among the trails are the North Crest Trail and Embudito Trail.
Located in Ojo del Orno Canyon, the North Crest Trail covers 3.5 miles and reaches an elevation of 1,010 feet. The North Crest Trail is shorter than most Sandia Mountains trails. It begins at the Tunnel Spring trailhead and loops around to the Crest Trail. Hikers should expect steep and rugged terrain that provides a nice workout.
Embudito Trail offers a more difficult experience. Hikers trek across 11 miles when using this trailhead. Traveling up 3,540 feet in elevation, they can enjoy views of the sandy arroyo streambed and evergreen trees. Trail users should take extra caution when traveling between Oso Pass and Embudito Trail. This stretch requires careful foot placement to ascend the steep mountainside.
