Thailand is a popular tourist destination thanks to its rich culture, unique cuisine, and pristine beaches. While many tourists flock to the country’s best-known cities and destinations, others are left largely ignored. Below are a few:
- Kanchanaburi: This lush town is perfect for visitors looking for adventure, history, and culture. Located in western Thailand, its bridge over the River Kwaithat connected Burma and the historic Death Railway from World War II. Meanwhile, guests can explore caves, waterfalls, elephant camps, and national parks nearby.
- Sukhothai: Established in the 13th century, Sukhothai was the first independent state in Thailand. It is a quiet destination perfect for a relaxing weekend trip, and it houses several historic parks featuring hundreds of ruins. Although the city’s importance has diminished over the years, its ability to immerse visitors into Thai culture has remained strong.
- Chiang Rai: Located at the northern tip of the country, Chiang Rai serves as the gateway to the surrounding area. It houses several ancient temples, including the 500-year-old Wat Klang Wiang and Wat Phra Kaew, and hosts weekly street fairs during the weekends. Further, visitors to the city can enjoy its many hiking trails, waterfalls, and rock-climbing opportunities.
